Actor Godfrey Gao Dies on Set of Reality TV Show
Godfrey Gao made his acting debut in the 2007 film Bull Fighting. He recently starred in the Chinese film Shanghai Fortress.

Taiwanese-Canadian actor Godfrey Gao passed away on Wednesday after collapsing on the set of a Chinese television reality show.

The 35-year-old was most famous for his role as Magnus Bane in the 2013 fantasy movie, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Godfrey Gao was on the set of Chase Me, a reality show where contestants compete in various physical challenges.

Gao’s management Jetstar confirmed the news about his passing in a statement to WWD. They said, “In the early hours of Nov. 27, our beloved Godfrey collapsed while filming on set. Unfortunately following three hours of medical rescue efforts, he left us. We are very shocked and saddened and even until now find it impossible to accept.”

Further adding, “Thank you media friends and every fan of Godfrey’s for their concern. His management and team were by his side and his family were urgently rushed to the location. Please respect Godfrey’s family in this time of sorrow and refrain from disturbing them. We will accompany Godfrey’s family to handle discreet funeral arrangements. Thank you, everyone.”

The producers of Chase Me also told the media outlet that the model collapsed on the ground while running. Medical staff immediately attended to him, but he passed away “due to heart issues.”

Many celebrities paid tribute to the young actor. His Mortal Instruments co-star Jaime posted a photo on Instagram with the caption, “our friend. Heartbroken.”

Kevin Zegers who played his love interest in the film wrote on Twitter, “RIP @GodfreyGao. Kindest guy I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with.”

Actor Harry Shum Jr. who played Magnus Bane in the Netflix version of The Mortal Instruments called ‘Shadowhunters’ also posted a heartfelt message on Instagram. He wrote, “I am shocked and heartbroken to hear of Godfrey Gao’s untimely passing. He was a pioneer in the Asian community that stretched our imaginations on what was possible in the industry. To the original Magnus Bane who left us too soon, I hope you know that you made an impression on the world that will last forever. My condolences to his family and friends.”
