Christian Navarro called out Disney for casting Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric in the live-action remake of ‘The Little Mermaid.’ The 28-year-old actor reportedly auditioned for the role as well.
Navarro is most popular for his role as Tony Padilla in the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why. The actor posted on his Instagram stories a photo of Hauer-King and wrote alongside, ”Literally @disney saw a who’s who list of actors of color and STILL went with the white guy.”
Further adding, ”So much for diversity. I guess two brown leads would have tanked the movie right? Boring.”
Navarro has since then deleted the post from his stories.
Furthermore, the actor also re-activated his Twitter just to slam the casting again. He wrote, ”Just came back to say; after months of seeing every person of color they could think of for the role of Prince Eric, @DisneyStudios somehow still cast a white guy.”
”I guess diversity is just a word. And THATS Hollywood,” he also said. ”One brown person is enough, two brown leads is unthinkable.”
Christian Navarro reportedly applied for the role of Prince Eric himself. He tweeted previously, “So I heard Harry Styles passed on Prince Eric. Well…I can sing. Black Ariel/Latino Prince…no ones called but Season 3 [of 13 Reasons Why] drops next week and I think it’s one hell of an audition.”
The following month, the 28-year-old actor revealed that he’d auditioned for the role and was looking forward to hearing back from casting directors.
Navarro also tweeted later that month that he was looking forward to hearing back from the directors of The Little Mermaid. He wrote, “Disney gave my team a call. They wanted to see what I could do. Tapes sent. Fingers crossed. Let’s make some history.”
Halle Bailey will be playing the role of Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
