Sonia Sae is a vegan activist and YouTuber based in Barcelona, Spain. She has recently angered animal lovers around the world by mistreating her pet fox, forcing him to live on a vegan diet.
On her YouTube channel, Sonia talks about a meat-free lifestyle, campaigns against the meat industry and also discusses animal rights issues. She feels passionately about this last one, since she herself has an exotic furry best friend.
Jumanji is a tiny Fennec fox, a breed of exotic fox that weighs about as much as a house cat. He’s supposed to be a furry little thing with big floppy ears and a lot of energy. However, Jumanji is anything but healthy.
The little fox is half blind, suffering from malnutrition and is missing a lot of his hair. Sonia Sae’s fans are becoming increasingly worried about his lifestyle and diet. It seems the vegan YouTuber not only flouts meat and dairy herself, but is also making her pet fox live a vegan life.
The vegan fox might have been a good idea on paper but, according to the latest police investigation, it’s not working out in real life. Jumanji was shown to be suffering from spontaneous convulsions and is so thin his ribs are poking out.
Sonia Sae adopted the now starved animal from a breeder back in 2014. However, even this claim is disputed as some fans claim that she bought him from an exotic pet dealer. Apparently, she made up the story to boost her YouTube and Instagram ratings.
Her Instagram ratings are through the roof anyway, and not for good reason. A lot of people, especially pet enthusiasts, have taken issue with the fact that Jumanji is fed only cat food. Many point out that this is ridiculous for the simple reason that he is not a cat. Had he been in the wild, the fox would have eaten mealworms, bugs, mice and other carnivorous foods.
Since he cannot get these foods, he suffers from the above mentioned problems as well as fatigue, lethargy and sore, sensitive skin. He also looks nothing like healthy Fennec foxes look in the wild.
An enraged Facebook user, Alice Natanya Moore, has started a whole campaign and is trying to enforce action to be taken. The post has already been shared 25,000 times.
“They [fennel foxes] are NOT omnivores. If you feed a fennec fox an omnivore diet they will get sick, it is not enough for them. In the wild, 90% of their food consists of meat and insects,” she wrote.
She also wrote that Jumanji’s partial blindness and hair loss are due to severe vitamin deficiency. The fox has a serious taurine deficiency since cat food does not contain this vitamin.
Alice also discussed his hair loss, writing, “He is experiencing hair loss(which she claims is an allergy)…he sheds his winter and summer coats…fennec foxes are a desert dwelling animal and do not have seasonal coats that they “shed”…meanwhile hair loss is a very common symptom of malnutrition.”
Local authorities do not have the necessary rights needed to take Jumanji away from his owner. However, activists everywhere have cropped up and are asking animal rights societies to step in. it’s always tragic to see an animal suffering at the hands of a human, no matter what the issue.
